This week we watched Citizen Kane and Run, Lola, Run. The reading mentioned something about a K motif in Kane's costume. I tried googling it and didn't come up with anything. This picture:

kind of shows a K in the white shining through the black, but I'm not sure if I believe it's actually there. Mostly it just looks like he wears a black jacket with thick lapels, which I guess can create a K shape. Or just depict him as wealthy individual. I did notice, however, that his two wives wear very similar costumes in the movie:

This ties into when we talked in class about Kane trying to prove his "love" through material items. The styles are so similar that it might be possible that he just gave all of Emily's clothes to Susan. This could show that he is resentful towards Susan for breaking up his marriage...he is "recycling" his love for Emily.
Also, don't these remind you a little bit of Lina Lamont? :

Similar story, a man having to keep a public image of adoration towards a woman despite having no feelings towards her. Interesting... white fur + diamonds = love?
Run, Lola, Run was a great film. I don't feel as though I could keep up with the fast succession of shots, so I think I'm going to go back and watch it a couple of more times to get the full effect. I do like the ADD style, it kept the story suspenseful and kept an urgent feeling throughout the entire film. Did anyone else notice the shattering glass motif? Perhaps it was meant depict that Lola felt like her life would shatter if Manni died...or maybe how fragile life is.
I'd like to end on this picture for any internet nerds like me:

Good catch about Emily dressing like Lina Lamont (or, vice-versa)! Gives you a feel for the time period, as 'Singin in the Rain' is set in the mid-late 20's.
ReplyDeleteLove the Lola pic at the end! (As an aside, you can actually embed imaged directly if you want, there's an 'insert image' button above the text box when you make a new post.)
